Koskisen’s new log yard in Järvelä completed – Fimpec in charge of project management and site supervision

Wood products company Koskisen has completed a €15 million investment in a new log yard in Järvelä, Kärkölä, which was commissioned in January 2025. Fimpec was broadly responsible for project management and site supervision.

Log yard brings sawmill operations together

The new log yard is a continuation of earlier collaboration between Koskisen and Fimpec. In a previous project, Fimpec was involved in relocating Koskisen’s sawing line from the Järvelä town center to Mäntsäläntie in Kärkölä, adjacent to post-processing and further processing operations. During the log yard construction in summer 2024, a parallel project – an extension of the channel dryer – was also completed, with Fimpec playing a role there as well.

With the completion of the log yard, all of Koskisen’s sawmill operations are now located on a single site. This allows the sawmill to be developed into a more competitive and efficient entity while significantly reducing both transport costs and the carbon footprint of logistics.

The project covered not only a 9-hectare log sorting yard but also a 400-meter timber conveyor line, a stormwater management system, and a two-storey building for control, office, and social facilities. Earthworks amounted to 90,000 m².

Fimpec involved from the very beginning

Having successfully delivered project management for the earlier wood processing unit, Fimpec was brought into the log yard project already in the pre-engineering and feasibility study phase, where its role included framing the budget and schedule. In the implementation phase, launched in 2023, Fimpec’s scope covered everything from managing construction engineering, procurement and coordination, and scheduling, to site management, supervision, and occupational safety.

According to Koskisen’s Director of Production, Lassi Santala, the company chose Fimpec as its partner because of Fimpec’s strong expertise in industrial construction. In industrial projects, equipment deliveries are always closely linked with infrastructure construction, and keeping equipment deliveries on schedule is extremely important.

“In Koskisen’s projects, Koskisen Oyj has acted as the main contractor, with Fimpec as project management consultant, providing the necessary and flexible resources in cooperation with our own project team. Working with Fimpec has been straightforward: the right professionals are smoothly allocated at the right time to move projects forward toward the desired outcome,” Santala highlights.

Fimpec’s Site Manager for the project, Markus Pekkola, confirms that the work proceeded smoothly, as reflected in the fact that construction was completed on schedule. This, in turn, ensured that equipment installations could begin as planned in a safe working environment. Occupational safety received special recognition from the client.

“Collaboration with Koskisen has always been smooth and uncomplicated. Familiar operating models, clear responsibilities, and mutual trust guarantee that we are on the same side of the table. Challenges are raised openly and solved quickly, and we never have to wait for decisions from the client,” Pekkola reflects.

He adds that throughout construction, emphasis was placed on respect for colleagues, good team spirit, and keeping the shared goal in view. Weekly coordination meetings supported this by reviewing the following week’s work and synchronizing the schedules of contractors working in the same area.

“The success of the project was based on fluent cooperation between the client, contractors, equipment suppliers, and engineers,” Pekkola shares.

Collaboration continues

The successful log yard project is also reflected in the fact that cooperation between Koskisen and Fimpec continues at the Kärkölä site. To increase drying capacity and improve timber quality, Koskisen has decided to invest in the construction of two new channel dryers.
