Fimpec is involved in the construction of Haaga’s Folkhälsan House

Folkhälsan is building a new residential complex with 82 apartments in South Haaga, Helsinki, offering communal living. Fimpec has been involved in the project from the early stages, driving forward the construction of a building that meets the updated Social Welfare Act’s requirements for communal living and emphasizes sustainable solutions.
The Folkhälsan House (Folkhälsanhuset i Haga) rising in South Haaga is an interesting and modern project from multiple perspectives. Its facilities comply with the updated Social Welfare Act’s requirements for communal living, and the building will also serve as an open meeting place for senior citizens. Special attention has been paid to sustainability requirements in both design and implementation.
“Folkhälsan always aims to be a pioneer, whether it’s baby swimming or senior housing. With Folkhälsanhuset i Haga, we are introducing a modern and completely new type of housing—communal living. This housing model has been carefully planned and developed over a long period in collaboration with top experts from various fields,” says Folkhälsan’s Property Director, Johan Johansson.
The building’s total floor area is slightly over 5,000 square meters, with a total investment of approximately 23 million euros. The six-story building consists of 82 apartments designed to meet the needs of senior residents, with an average size of 38.5 square meters. In addition to high-quality apartments, the complex will feature a kitchen, dining hall, gym, activity and social spaces, and a comfortable residential courtyard.
Sustainability requirements have been considered, for example, in the carbon-optimized structural frame, which combines an on-site cast concrete slab and column structure with wooden partition walls and a wooden facade. The building will be heated using geothermal energy to achieve a high level of energy self-sufficiency. A green roof will also be installed.
The new Folkhälsan House is being built on a site previously occupied by Kristinagården, a senior housing facility taken over by Folkhälsan Välfärd Ab in 2015. As Kristinagården no longer met the requirements for senior living in terms of both residents and operations, it was decided to demolish the building.
Fimpec joined the project in the early stages
Construction work on Haaga’s Folkhälsan House began in autumn 2024. The project has progressed as planned, and a foundation stone laying ceremony was held on January 28, 2025. The building is set for completion in summer 2026. The construction phase was preceded by thorough preparation and planning, in which Fimpec was involved from the very beginning.
Fimpec has played the role of construction management consultant in the project. Initially, in collaboration with the client, it was determined whether the previous Kristinagården senior housing facility should be renovated or replaced with a new building. Since then, Fimpec has been actively involved in the project’s development, overseeing the zoning process and managing investment proposals, cost estimates, and carbon footprint calculations. Once construction commenced, Fimpec took responsibility for project management and supervision tasks.
“This is an inspiring project for us, characterized by Folkhälsan’s innovation and its commitment to realizing its vision as a pioneer in care services. We have done extensive work in pre-planning, zoning, designing user solutions, and execution, with excellent collaboration between Folkhälsan, the principal designer Ahlman Arkkitehdit Arkitekter Oy Ab, and the main contractor, construction company Skanska,” says Mikko Turunen, Managing Director of Fimpec PMO.
“Folkhälsan always seeks the best and most professional partners with whom it can establish long-term collaborations. Fimpec is exactly that kind of partner—professional, solution-oriented, and reliable,” Johansson concludes.
Folkhälsan is the largest Swedish-speaking organization in Finland, working to improve health and quality of life. It operates as both a service provider and an expert organization, as well as a civic movement that has been active for over a century. Folkhälsan’s activities in Finland and Åland include daycare centers, youth support services, education, elderly and disability services, and a world-class research center.
