In 2019-2021, Finland’s largest wind farm will be built at the Piiparinmäki area of Pyhäntä and Kajaani. There will be 41 wind power units with a rated power of 211 MW in the area. The wind farm will be built without public funds; 60 per cent of the energy produced will be used by Google. The wind farm will start producing electricity already in 2020. During the construction stage, the direct and indirect employment effect of the wind farm will exceed 500 person-years.

Fimpec Oy has participated in project preparations since spring 2018. In the actual construction project recently launched, Fimpec is responsible for supervision over wind farm construction works.

Mikko Toivanen, the founder and Construction Manager of Ilmatar, finds that in such a large wind power project, the importance of scheduling and co-ordination of different work stages is emphasized. According to him, Fimpec has an important role in this.

“In case of smaller wind farm projects, at first, the civil engineering and foundation works are completed, followed by lifting the turbines in place. At Piiparinmäki, work stages of different type are performed overlappingly. This adds to project-related challenges.”

“Fimpec has ample experience with extremely complex projects containing a host of details to be managed. For us, this was another important reason for involving Fimpec as a supervisor. In addition, during the preparatory stage, we were impressed by the professional approach of Fimpec’s experts,” he says.

Jorma Paananen, Business Unit Director, Infra, of Fimpec Oy, admits that the project is important for the company. It means opening the door to a new area in infrastructure construction.

“Over the years, we have implemented numerous larger and smaller industrial and power engineering investment projects, as well as various infrastructure construction projects. In the supervision of the Piiparinmäki wind farm, we can utilise the experience gained from these earlier projects and the extensive expertise of our specialists.”
