Investments in clean transition are key to Finland’s sustainable success
The development of new technologies, improving energy efficiency, and sustainability are central to the transformation of the energy sector.
“We have a unique opportunity to become a leader in the hydrogen economy by utilizing the available clean electricity and water in the production of hydrogen-based fuels and fertilizers. This presents a golden opportunity for all the Nordic countries. Carbon dioxide will be a significant part of the business, not only in energy companies but also in the forest and steel industries,” says Sami Nissinen, Business Unit Director of Energy Services at Fimpec.
Carbon capture is also one of the major future trends, and its role in energy production is rapidly growing. By combining captured carbon dioxide with hydrogen, fuels such as methane and methanol can be produced. In addition, emerging technologies like energy storage solutions, the use of waste heat and energy, centralized district cooling, and the use of renewable energy sources are propelling Finland towards carbon neutrality.
“However, clean transition projects need support, as new forms of energy production are still more expensive than traditional ones. Regulations have acted as a boost to the industry, pushing technological development forward by several steps. The advancement of technology is so rapid that energy production based on combustion could end within four years. In recent years, special attention has been paid to the sustainability of district heating production: where the fuel comes from and what happens to the carbon dioxide produced,” Nissinen explains.
The reliability of power plants can be improved through modernization, control system upgrades, and proactive maintenance. One of the most significant environmental actions is replacing oil boilers with electric ones and substituting fossil fuels with renewable alternatives.
