Grand opening of Harjavalta’s green hydrogen plant celebrated in style

The grand opening of P2X Solutions’ green hydrogen production plant in Harjavalta took place on March 26th. Fimpec played a key role in procurement and site operations for this pioneering facility.

A significant milestone in Finland’s green hydrogen economy was reached on March 26th with the inauguration of Finland’s first green hydrogen production plant and methanation facility in Harjavalta. Commercial production at P2X Solutions’ plant had already commenced on February 12th.

Among the attendees at the opening ceremony was the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, who remarked that the Harjavalta green hydrogen production plant is a concrete example of how clean energy production can drive sustainable growth.

“Here in Harjavalta, you did not wait for change – you made it happen,” he stated.

“Finland has excellent conditions to become a global leader in clean hydrogen and its derivative fuels. I want to thank our team and all our partners for this historic achievement. This marks a great starting point for continuing our pioneering work in expanding the hydrogen economy in Finland with new production units,” said Herkko Plit, founder and CEO of P2X Solutions.

Harjavalta’s hydrogen production plant is Finland’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen facility. With a capacity of 20 MW, the plant’s hydrogen production can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40,000 tons annually. Construction of the plant began in the fall of 2023.

The company’s first customer was Danisco Sweeteners’ factory in Kotka, where hydrogen is used in xylitol production. In the future, hydrogen will also be refined into methane as the methanation facility, part of the overall plant, enters production use.

A pioneer project executed with strong collaboration

P2X Solutions’ Harjavalta production plant represents a true pioneering project. From a construction perspective, it required significant development efforts and the application of new solutions. Fimpec has been involved in the project from an early stage, handling procurement and scheduling.

During the construction phase, Fimpec was responsible for key site operations, including construction supervision, oversight of electrical work, installation, pipeline work, automation and instrumentation supervision, as well as HSE monitoring. Fimpec also participated in building the reception facilities at Danisco Sweeteners’ factory.

“Collaboration with Fimpec has been smooth, and any challenges that arose were handled professionally while keeping customer needs in focus,” said Herkko Plit.

“P2X Solutions is an important client for us, and we have had the opportunity to engage in long-term and effective collaboration in executing this significant pioneering project. It has allowed us to leverage Fimpec’s diverse expertise and further develop our capabilities,” said Jorma Paananen, Business Director at Fimpec, who coordinated the project.

Long-term collaboration between Fimpec and P2X Solutions

The Harjavalta hydrogen production plant has been a key part of the collaboration between P2X Solutions and Fimpec, but their partnership will continue beyond the plant’s inauguration. Fimpec is also involved in the preparation of P2X Solutions’ production facilities in Oulu and Joensuu.
