Topping-out ceremony held for Fingrid’s gas turbine unit relocation project

The relocation project of Fingrid Oyj’s three Frame 5 gas turbine units has progressed as planned, and on Thursday, November 14, a topping-out ceremony was held for the new turbine hall at Huutokoski in Joroinen, Finland. Fimpec is providing EPCM services for the project, acting as the main consultant responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction management.

The relocation project involves moving three 26 MW Frame 5 gas turbine units to the Huutokoski reserve power plant in Joroinen, North Savo. One of the units will be relocated from Vaskiluoto in Vaasa and two from Tahkoluoto in Pori.

As part of the project, a new turbine hall will be constructed to house the three gas turbines. Construction work is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2024, with the project expected to be completed in early 2026. The work has progressed on schedule, leading to the topping-out milestone.

The Huutokoski reserve power plant currently has a capacity of 180 MW and is situated on a large plot of land. The relocated gas turbines will add 78 MW, bringing the total capacity of the Huutokoski facility to 258 MW. This increased capacity will help balance the power grid during system disturbances.

“The project has progressed smoothly to this milestone. Cooperation has been effective, and we have stayed on schedule. The flexible EPCM project management model has facilitated smooth decision-making and enabled swift initiation of necessary procurements and work,” said Project Manager Jarmo Hämäläinen from Fingrid and Business Unit Director Sami Nissinen from Fimpec.

Fimpec joined the project in August 2023.
