Kotkamills modernised its pulp mill’s washing line, Fimpec was responsible for engineering

Kotkamills Oy boosted the operations of its pulp mill by modernising a washing line in summer 2020. In the project, which was on a tight schedule, Fimpec (CTS Engtec) was responsible for process, electrical, and mechanical engineering.

Kotkamills’ pulp mill modernised one of its washing lines in summer 2020 by replacing the upper parts of its drum displacers. The project saw the old equipment replaced to improve the efficiency of the washing line. After modernisation, the power of the line was sufficient to meet the needs of the cooking lines, so separate washing lines are no longer needed.

Increasing the capacity of the pulp mill’s washing line aligned with the mill’s strategy. The aim was to increase the overall capacity of Kotkamills’ Absorbex laminate paper line. The current project was a continuation of the existing project to increase capacity. Next, the aim is to modernise cooking line 1 and to progress the subproject.

Modernisation of the washing line was executed on a tight schedule in 2020. Engineering took place in March, installation at the mill began in late June, and the modernised washing line was taken into use by the end of August. Fimpec (CTS Engtec) carried out the process and electrical engineering required for the modernisation.

“We have a framework agreement, and we have collaborated before. The fact that we were familiar with the project staff also helped us to complete the project,” says Technical Manager Jan Lousa from Kotkamills.

“For us this was an important engineering job. Our engineers are familiar with pulp mills, so the project suited our competence profile well. That helped us to complete the engineering work on the desired schedule. For mechanical engineering, we used laser scanning to first create a point-cloud model, followed by a 3D model, which aids engineering at sites where you need to account for existing structures and equipment,” explains Project Manager Jari Sipola, who led the project at CTS Engtec.

Staff from CTS Engtec participated in the project from Kouvola and the new Kotka office, which CTS Engtec aims to use to provide its customers in Etelä-Kymenlaakso with more comprehensive local services.
